Just outside Ann Arbor, Michigan, there is a company with a mission to help other organizations motivate and engage their employees. eePulse, Inc. was founded in 1996 by President and CEO Theresa Welbourne, Ph.D. Her research firm uses innovative tools, research methods and anonymous surveys to uncover how employees feel their management needs to improve.

eePulse is an outgrowth of the research Dr. Welbourne conducted as a professor at Cornell University. She obtained a Technology Transfer Grant to establish her small business and was the first woman to do so. Dr. Welbourne’s research seeks out leaders in business and management to learn how to enhance employee communication, management skills and create a positive work environment.

Even though eePulse’s main focus is to find solutions for their clients’ management problems, the company makes sure to take time to focus on its own employees. Its 15 staff members are constantly working in teams and in direct contact with the clients. Dr. Welbourne believes this helps everyone feel part of each project. In addition, she hires consulting agencies to interview employees and get feedback about their own management. This technique formulated a popular communication method the company calls the “priority moment.” During meetings, employees will call a “time-out” to ask everyone what they are working on and what their top three priorities are. This allows everyone to stay informed and on target.

Best Practices.Dr. Welbourne believes its critical for bosses to be conscious of respecting everyone they work with. “It’s easy to let people know you know more than everyone else,” she says. “Don’t let your head get too big, and help people with direction.”
