Weigh in on the Question of the Week:

What advice would you give to someone considering a mid-life career change?

Lead from the core

Dealing with a difficult boss? Wish you could say something to make a difference, but feel like you can’t? Want to share why your boss is one in a million?

Now's the time, this is the place to tell your boss exactly what you're thinking. Vent your frustrations. Sing your praises. Offer suggestions. Give support and guidance. Speak your mind. Together, we can improve workplace communication and job satisfaction.

Do not use actual names of people, companies or organizations. To maintain confidentiality, posts that contain names will be deleted.

Use my strengths!

Posted by Anonymous

I wish more managers knew how to manage individuals based on their own strengths and weaknesses. You can’t give an identical task to two individuals and expect to get identical results.

I may be able to work up spreadsheets for you all day, but my co-worker might prefer a completely different method of presenting the information to you.

Allocate your resources based on their strengths! Some folks are “big picture” people, and some are more “detail” oriented. Neither is necessarily right or wrong.

Workplace Bullying Documentary

Posted by Anonymous

I’m the producer on a feature documentary currently in production by Emmy and Sundance Award winning director Lee Hirsch about bullying. We are looking to share the stories of those who are currently dealing with bullying in the workplace, and aim, through this film, to raise awareness about what a critical issue this is, and hopefully find some solutions. We are looking for people who are currently contending with bullying in their workplace to participate in the film. For more information, please contact bullyproject@verizon.net.

Blinded by my boss

What good does a company vision do if your boss is unwilling and unable to share the strategic vision with you? Ultimately, we are the ones who will make it happen, but I can’t work toward it if I can’t see it.

Gossip Alert

I’m a project manager at a consulting firm. The place is great and I have no problem with my boss, but I cannot stand one of my co-workers. She never has a positive attitude towards work and contributes nothing to team projects. Although, she has mastered the art of prying into your personal business. How can I just zone her out so I can actually enjoy my job!

If the company only knew

Why I No Longer Like My Job

Posted by Anonymous

About a week ago, my boss unexpectedly passed away. Before this, I never realized how close I was to him. Even though I didn’t always think he was qualified for his position, we got along and communicated well. He was not only my boss, but also my friend. Even though its only been a week, I haven’t enjoyed going to work. The temporary replacement is not nearly as good of a boss.

Managing people sucks

Posted by Anonymous

Over the past 10 years I’ve gone from entry level to management. All that time climbing the corporate ladder only to find out that I hate it “at the top.” I’d much rather be making a real difference in the world than babysitting adults. Now I’m thinking of a total career change, but am afraid I’ll work really hard just to end up not liking that either. Arghh!

Same old story

How many times does my boss have to tell the same story over and over again? We’ve all heard it at least 4 times by now, and even the 1st time wasn’t that interesting.

Work ethic??

Posted by Anonymous

I read your article in the Baltimore Business Journal. I couldn’t agree more about the attitude in corporate American that is making everyone do more with less. Workers are fast reaching or have already reached the breaking point. The sad thing is this is nothing new. Many bosses have been expecting us to work our asses off in non-recessionary times as well, and they model this behavior of working ridiculous hours and being on call 24/7. When are we going to realize that this “work ethic” as we are so fond of calling it, isn’t ethical at all. It is destroying our health, our productivity and our enjoyment of life. Stop the insanity!

Working lunch

Posted by Anonymous

Whatever happened to lunch breaks? My company wants to squeeze every last ounce of work out of me by scheduling working lunches almost every day of the week. When are they going to realize that we need breaks to maintain our sanity and productivity. The lack of caring just astounds me.
