Mentors

I recall years ago on completion of my undergrad degree and securing my first full-time job telling my deparment manager that I was leaving. His reply, “So your going to be a jack-of-all-trades and master of none.” This person wasn’t my direct supervisor, so I was really stung by the comment and have often thought about this experience and knew I didn’t what to be this type of leader.

Years later, as a department manager myself, I recall one of my staff describing me as a great mentor and the impact that I had on their young career. While delighted at the feedback, I was somewhat shocked that someone thought I was expereinced enough, wise enough, and yeah, old enough to be viewed be a mentor. How the heck did that happen! Life progress while your busy living it! Sometimes you have to take a step back and look around to see your impact. Life can be pretty sweet if you just take the time to look.
